Faring slightly worse than the baseline-hugging major indices, small-cap stocks slipped onto the losing side Friday.
Shares of Amcol (ACO Quote) retreated 15.5% to $26.18 on fourth-quarter earnings. The Arlington Heights, Ill., minerals company posted income of $10.8 million, or 35 cents a share, vs. $12 million, or 39 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter, falling short of analysts' mean forecast of 44 cents a share.
Also falling hard, Woodbridge, Ill.-based biotech Advanced Life Sciences (ADLS Quote) shares sunk 41% to 89 cents on a downgrade by Lazard Capital to hold from buy on concerns about the fate of its community-acquired pneumonia drug cethromycin. ...
