Newmont Mining(NEM Quote) was among the NYSE's winners Wednesday, as the gold miner easily beat third-quarter expectations.
Newmont reported net income of $397 million, or 88 cents a share, vs. $198 million, or 44 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. It posted revenue of $1.65 billion, compared to $1.10 billion a year ago. Earnings from continuing operations jumped to 72 cents a share from 9 cents a share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had expected earnings of 25 cents a share on revenue of $1.40 billion. Shares were rising $3.76, or 8.1%, to $50.20.
Transocean(RIG Quote) shares also were rising 2.9% after the oil and gas driller beat third-quarter expectations. The company posted net income of $973 million, or $3.24 a share, vs. $309 million, or 96 cents a share, in the year-ago period. Transocean reported revenue of $1.54 billion, up from $1.03 billion a year ago. The results include one-time gains of $336 million, or $1.12 a share, from a tax-sharing agreement; $52 million, primarily in foreign tax credits; and $8 million from the sale of assets.
