Oil futures rallied past $73 at one point Monday, but the buying momentum faded in the afternoon as the end of the session drew near.
September light sweet crude was recently down 22 cents at $71.25 a barrel at the New York Mercantile Exchange. Reformulated gasoline was losing 2 cents at $1.93 a gallon, and heating oil was little changed at $1.97 a gallon.
