Beazer Homes(BZH Quote) was among the NYSE's losers Wednesday, tumbling 8.4% after the homebuilder said it has received a request for documents from the U.S. attorney's office.
The company issued a statement in response to news reports that federal investigators are looking at its mortgage-lending practices in a criminal probe. Business Week reported that the FBI, IRS, Justice Department and the Inspector General of Housing and Urban Development have launched an investigation.
Beazer said that it is cooperating with the U.S. attorney's office. It said it believes the request for documents was fueled by a news report in the Charlotte Observer. "We have further been told by the U.S. attorney's office that the statements by the FBI and published by Business Week were not authorized and should not have been made," the company said.
