Also Tuesday

Bestfoods (BFO) reported stronger-than-expected earnings of 56 cents per share, beating the 14-analyst estimate of 54 cents and topping last year's 49-cent return.

Biogen (BGEN) posted first-quarter operating earnings of 41 cents a share, excluding a 36-cent gain. That's way up from last year's first-quarter results of 29 cents but missing the 23-analyst estimate of 43 cents.

CVS (CVS) reported a 9.2% increase in same-store sales in March. The company saw total sales for the five-week period ended April 1 rise 12.2%.

E.W. Scripps (SSP), a newspaper publisher, posted operating earnings of 45 cents a share, ahead of the eight-analyst estimate of 39 cents and up from the year-ago 40 cents.

E-Tek Dynamics (ETEK), a manufacturer of fiber optic components and modules for optical networks, announced that it earned 24 cents in its fiscal third quarter versus 14 cents in the same period last year. The number beat the 16-analyst estimate of 21 cents a share.

GenRad (GEN), a manufacturer of integrated hardware and software solutions, announced it anticipates a 20% growth in revenue compared with the first quarter of 1999, but is expected to report first-quarter earnings in the range of 6 cents to 8 cents a share, lower than the analyst estimate of 15 cents. The company attributed the earnings shortfall to higher component prices, logistics costs and account delays.

Satellite provider PanAmSat (SPOT) reported first-quarter earnings of 38 cents a share, beating the 14-analyst estimate of 19 cents a share and the year-ago 20 cents.

Restaurant franchise owner Rare Hospitality (RARE) foresees first-quarter operating earnings will rise 61.8%, to 55 cents, before a charge from the settlement of a legal dispute. The current analyst estimate calls for Rare Hospitality to come in at 44 cents. The company earned 34 cents a year ago before an accounting charge.

Raytheon (RTN.A) warned that it expects first-quarter 2000 earnings to be hurt by contract problems at Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, and that it's in talks about a sale, joint venture or spinoff of the unit. RE&C's results will not be reported in continuing operations, and the company predicts the loss attributable to RE&C operations will fall between 15 and 20 cents. Raytheon expects earnings for its continuing operations to meet analysts' estimates of 23 cents to 27 cents per share. In addition, the company foresees first-quarter net debt to increase $500 million, less than planned and better than analysts' expectations.

Wireless company Research in Motion (RIMM) reported fourth-quarter earnings of 5 cents a share, matching its results from the same quarter a year ago and in-line with the 11-analyst estimate.

Suntrust Banks (STI) listed first-quarter earnings of $1.07, beating the 22-analyst estimate by a penny and up from the year-ago 91 cents.

Terayon (TERN) reported better-than-expected first-quarter earnings this evening of 6 cents a share, compared with the 8-analyst estimate of 4 cents and the year-ago loss of 23 cents a share.
