Intel Acquiring Three Optical Networking Companies

 

Intel(INTC Quote) agreed to acquire three companies that produce electrical components used in optical networking equipment.

Financial terms of the acquisitions weren't disclosed. The company acquired Cognet, which is based in Los Angeles, and nSerial, Santa Clara, Calif. Both companies develop high-speed electronic components for 10-gigabit ethernet optical modules. Additionally, Intel agreed to buy LightLogic, Newark, Calif., a provider of highly integrated, high-speed optical equipment.

"The optical networking equipment industry is now segmenting in a way that requires unique solutions for different market segments," Intel said in a statement. "Our communications equipment customers are asking us to integrate high-speed electronic and photonic components into cost-effective building blocks that help them reduce time to market."

Shares of Intel were off 34 cents, or 1.1%, to $29.98 in recent Nasdaq trading.
