Report: Citigroup Looking to Purchase American Express
Another blue-chip wedding in the works?
Citigroup's(C Quote) chairman, Sandy Weill, may be interested in buying "Don't-leave-home-without-it" credit card giant American Express(AXP Quote), according to BusinessWeek. Weill was president of AmEx in the early 1980s and reports say he expected to run the company, succeeding James Robinson, but lost in a power struggle. The report said acquiring AmEx would be a coup for Citigroup because the financial giant would gain more than 53 million AmEx cardholders and the world-famous name. The article also cites Morgan Stanley Dean Witter(MWD Quote) and American International Group(AIG Quote) as also being interested in acquiring American Express.- Loading Comments...
