How Samsung Is Trying to Take the Press From Apple

NEW YORK (TheStreet) –– Samsung announced three new products at its event today, the Galaxy Note Edge, the Galaxy Note 4 and the Gear VR, showing off Samsung's future.

Both of the Google (GOOGL - Get Report) Android phones will have a 2.7GHz quad-core processor, a quad-HD Super AMOLED screen, and come with an improved version Samsung's S Pen. The Note Edge shows off a curved display, with the screen wrapping around the right side, as Samsung tries to differentiate itself from Apple (AAPL - Get Report) and other smartphone makers.

Apple is widely expected to announce two new iPhones next week at an event in California, as well as other potential products and services, including a wearable device as well as mobile payments service.

Both the Note Edge and Note 4 are similar in size, with the Edge having a 5.6-inch screen, and the Note 4 coming in at 5.7-inches. Each phone has a 16 MP rear-facing camera and a 3.7 MP front camera that can be expanded beyond the standard 90 degrees to 120 degrees for those fun loving group selfies. They'll also have expandable storage and removable batteries, for those worried about battery life.

Pricing on the phones was not announced but, Samsung expects them in stores and carriers in the fall.

The Gear VR shows off Samsung's ability to innovate. The Gear VR, developed in part by using technology from Oculus Rift, is a stand-alone device, but it does use the Note 4 for power and processing so the user can walk around with it or sit down anywhere. Oculus was purchased by Facebook (FB) earlier this year for $2 billion in cash and stock

Samsung has lined up several major entertainment and gaming companies to be part of the Gear VR, including Time Warner, Marvel and others. It comes pre-loaded with Tony Stark's lab in the upcoming Avengers movie, a Pacific Rim game, various photo and movie galleries and more.

As with the phones, there was no pricing information on the Gear VR, but Samsung did confirm to me that it would be available in the fall in the U.S. and around the world.
