NEW YORK (TheStreet) --
(AAPL) released the latest versions of its MacBook Pro with Retina display just in time for the back-to-school shopping season, with faster chips and double the memory.
Apple also cut the price of the high-end 15-inch model, which has Turbo Boost and speeds of up to 3.7 GHz, from $2,599 to $2,499. The entry level 15-inch model remained at $1,999, while the entry-level 13-inch model remained at $1,299.
The updated versions are available online starting today.
The latest 15-inch model is six times faster and has quad-core Intel Core i7 with processors up to 2.5 GHz and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.7 GHz. The models also have 16GB in memory, double the amount of its entry-level notebook.

The 13-inch model has dual-core Intel Core i5 with processors up to 2.8 GHz and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.3 GHz. Apple also doubled the memory to 8GB.
The 15-inch model now comes with over 5 million pixels in its screen, while the 13-inch model has over 4 million. Appealing to photographers, videographers and gamers alike, the 13-inch display has 2560 by 1600 pixels and the 15-inch has an impressive 2800 by 1800 pixels.
Apple sales of all Macs--including the desktop and laptop versions--rose 18% in the fiscal third quarter ended June 28, to 4.4 million units, while revenue for the line rose 13%, to $5.5 billion. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO noted the success of the Mac sales in the company's July 22 earnings statement.
"Our record June quarter revenue was fueled by strong sales of iPhone and Mac and the continued growth of revenue from the Apple ecosystem, driving our highest EPS growth rate in seven quarters," said Cook.
The latest Macbook Pro with Retina display lineup is released a few months ahead of the next major version of Mac OS X Yosemite. The latest software was released by Apple to one million beta testers last week. Apple promises that the new Yosemite software will be a free upgrade to users when it's released in the fall. Phillip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing was quick to guarantee this when announcing the line's release.
"People love their MacBook Pro because of the thin and light, aluminum unibody design, beautiful Retina display, all day battery life and deep integration with OS X," said Schiller. "The MacBook Pro with Retina display gets even better with faster processors, more memory, more affordable configurations and a free upgrade to OS X Yosemite this fall."
