NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- For many people, the American dream is realized when they land that perfect, well-paying job. Financial freedom is something we all strive to achieve, and a lot of people fantasize about joining the ranks of the richest people in the country. 

In the U.S., there are certain places where the American dream can be more easily realized, as those locations rank as the richest states in America.

A number of factors can impact what makes one state richer than another, including strong college graduation rates, a healthy tourism economy, highly skilled workers, and an increase in the availability of employment opportunities. 

Henry David Thoreau once said "Wealth is the ability to fully experience life," and in order to experience life, we first need to earn the money to afford it. After all, nothing in life worth having ever comes cheaply.

Below is a list of the 10 richest states in the U.S., followed by the 10 poorest, based on each state's median household income data as of November 2014, which was compiled by Bloomberg
