L-3 Communications (NYSE:LLL) announced today that it has received two prestigious James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Awards from the U.S. Department of Defense, Defense Security Service (DSS). L-3’s corporate headquarters as well as its Fuzing & Ordnance Systems (FOS) division were selected as two of 40 recipients of this year’s award from a field of 13,300 cleared defense contractors.
Since 2005, L-3 has been recognized with 17 Cogswell Awards for industrial security excellence – the highest honor a company can receive in the handling of classified information. This is the 10th consecutive year that L-3 has received at least one Cogswell Award for outstanding security practices.
“In the current industry environment, outstanding security practices are a critical business discriminator and across L-3 we strive to not only meet, but exceed the DoD’s compliance requirements and deliver a sustained level of security excellence,” said Michael T. Strianese, chairman, president and chief executive officer of L-3. “For many years, L-3 business units have earned superior ratings from DSS, which reflects our company-wide commitment to industrial security. This year, I am particularly proud that our headquarters office has received a Cogswell Award, along with our FOS business, which is a major contributor to national security and our military forces.”
The Cogswell Award selection process is both competitive and rigorous, requiring nominated facilities to clearly demonstrate a consistent and ongoing degree of excellence and innovation in security program management and oversight. A national review team is responsible for consolidating and ranking the thoroughly vetted nominees, and DSS makes the final award selections.Headquartered in New York City, L-3 employs approximately 48,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aerospace systems and national security solutions. L-3 is also a leading provider of a broad range of communication and electronic systems and products used on military and commercial platforms. The company reported 2013 sales of $12.6 billion.
