Consumer Worry Over Data Breaches Jumps 25% in Year

NEW YORK (LowCards.com) -- According to the Unisys Security Index Report, an increasing number of Americans are "very" concerned about the security of their financial information.

Only 28% of Americans said they were "very" concerned last year, but 35% reported the same level of worry now.

More than half (59%) of the people surveyed in March said they were very or extremely concerned about other people getting their credit or debit card details. Only 17% said they were not concerned at all, down from 18% last year and 19% in 2012. It seems that recent credit card breaches at TargetMichaelsNeiman Marcus and Sally Beauty have caused questions for some Americans.

Nearly four out of 10 people express heavy concern for online shopping and online banking. Only 34% of people were not concerned at all.

Many people expressed concerns about computer security, and 36% said they were worried about their computers in reference to spam emails and viruses.

A significant finding is the fact that 59% of those surveyed said they would be less likely to do business with a company after a security data breach. If stores continue to suffer data breaches as they have been over the past few months, this could be quite a blow to the retail community.

Bill Hardekopf is chief executive of LowCards.com, which compares and rates more than 1,000 credit cards. He is the co-author of "The Credit Card Guidebook."
