Facebook Just Made It Easier to Boast How Cool You Are

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- In case an emoticon just doesn't sum up all your feels, Facebook FB has launched a new feature allowing users to update friends on exactly what they're doing. Like, right now. This second.

The social network announced Wednesday optional functionality for users to automatically include what music they're listening to or TV or movie they're watching directly into their status updates.  "When writing a status update - if you choose to turn the feature on - you'll have the option to use your phone's microphone to identify what song is playing or what show or movie is on TV," the company explained in a statement.

Similar to audio-identifying app Shazam, the feature will trawl its database to pinpoint exactly what you're watching or listening to. Then, once posted in a status update, friends will be able to watch a 30-second preview of the song or show.

Shares of Facebook were higher in mid-Wednesday trading, up 1.6% to $59.49.

With Facebook's 1.28 billion monthly active users (MAUs), the Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook will continue to collect more data on what users consume, watch, buy or enjoy, advertisements targeting those specific users can be sold at a premium.

For the first-quarter, Facebook generated $2.5 billion in revenue, an increase of 72%, compared with $1.46 billion in the first quarter of 2013. Revenue from advertising was $2.27 billion, up 82% year-over-year, while mobile ad revenue represented about 59% of advertising revenue in the first quarter.

Facebook recently introduced ways to expand its reach with advertisers, introducing Facebook Audience Network, the company's mobile ad exchange at its F8 developer conference earlier this month.

As social networking rival Twitter (TWTR) has become the place for people to discuss movies, television or awards shows, with a "Second-screen experience," Facebook seeks to bring that that conversation back home, encouraging those kinds of passionate interactions directly in your Newsfeed.

The optional feature will be available on Android and iOS in the U.S. in the coming weeks.
