Despite Same Record, Yankees Tickets Still 35% More Expensive Than Mets Tickets at Home

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Baseball in New York has flourished after a chilly April. Both the Yankees and Mets have identical 15-11 records at the end of the season's opening month. Hopes are high for both clubs, but average home ticket prices vary considerably between hometown parks in the Bronx and Queens according to TiqIQ.

The Yankees have started strong with the help of a talented pitching staff and new, albeit expensive, off-season acquisitions Carlos Beltran, Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury. With such a talent-packed roster, it's not surprising that the Yankees reign supreme in highest average ticket price in New York. At the beginning of May, the average price for New York Yankees tickets at Yankee Stadium is $132.22. The Yankees also lead the American League in total attendance at home with 538,433 fans already flocking to the House That Ruth Built.

For their part, the Mets have remained on pace to accomplish their goal of 90 wins set by general manager Sandy Alderson during spring training. With a starting pitching staff that has impressed early, the Mets have silenced the naysayers, at least for the time being. The average price for New York Mets tickets at Citi Field is $97.81 after the first month of games on the Mets schedule, a stark contrast to Yankees tickets, which are almost 35% higher at Yankee Stadium. The Mets are currently sixth in total attendance in the National League, with 432,928 swiping their tickets at Citi Field this season.

In addition to higher ticket prices and overall attendance, the Yankees also tower over the Mets in average attendance per home game. Through 13 games at Yankee Stadium this season, the Yankees have averaged 41,418 each game. The Mets have played three more homes games than the Yankees, averaging a significantly lower 27,058 per home game. Though Yankee Stadium holds over 5,000 more seats than Citi Field, the Yankees have been fortunate to see near-capacity attendance at each home game so far. Per game, the Yankees have filled the stadium to 82.3% of capacity, while the Mets have only filled 60.1%.

The league-leading attendance numbers and high ticket prices are no surprise to the Yankees this year. Along with Derek Jeter's farewell tour and the off-season signings of Beltran, Ellsbury and McCann, the Yankees have given their fans even more reason to visit the Bronx this summer than in recent years. A winning record at the beginning of May and a first-place standing in the American League East certainly doesn't hurt, either. Tickets also get more expensive the deeper games get on the Yankees schedule, as fans will be increasing efforts to attend Jeter's last games towards the end of the regular season.

The Mets will have to consistently play like they have in April to be considered a serious contender. Until then, seats will continue to remain vacant in Queens. A young pitching staff has shown promise, but an injured Matt Harvey and minimal offense the Mets have produced leaves little desire for fans to pay big prices. If the wins keep coming, however, there may be life back in the stands at Citi Field come late August.
