Who Knew?: Kings-Sharks Tickets a Very Big Hit

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Nearly everyone enjoys an extended playoff series.

With the exception of perhaps a team that was once leading the series, the excitement and additional revenue of a series that goes seven games is welcomed by the league, the contesting teams, television partners and of course, their fans. With two series of the NHL playoffs already set up for a Game 7, and a third pending the outcome of New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers Game 6, secondary market prices are surging.

With an average ticket price of $203.49 on the secondary market, the game between the Minnesota Wild and Colorado Avalanche is currently the least expensive Game 7. Despite a price decline of 5.24% in the past 24 hours, this figure still represents a 22.94% premium over the series average.

After a thrilling Game 6 victory at home, the Minnesota Wild have seemed to inspire a little more confidence in their fan base as ticket prices for a potential trip to the next round have risen to an average of $311.54 in the hours following the win. This rise has moved Wild playoff tickets for the Divisional Finals ahead of Avalanche playoff tickets for the Divisional Finals, which check in with an average price of $304.24.

While ticket price for the Wild/Avalanche Game 7 have fallen in the past 24 hours, the same cannot be said for Kings/Sharks tickets which have risen 14.61% to an average of $217.63. Throughout the first round, this has been one of the least expensive series to grab tickets for, despite being one of the most exciting. This recent increase for Game 7 now has the game priced 42.3% above the series average, making it the Game 7 with the highest premium relative to series average. Over the past four seasons, the 42.3% premium trails only the Senators and Rangers Game 7 in 2012 as the highest premium for a non-Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 in the NHL.

This year after taking a 3-0 series lead and looking like this could finally be the year they come out of the Western Conference, the Sharks have sputtered of late and lost three straight to the Kings. Undoubtedly, this has resulted in a shift of momentum to the Kings, and Kings playoff tickets for the Divisional Finals have ridden this momentum up to an average price of $299.05. Contrarily, Sharks playoff tickets for the Divisional Finals still remain one of the least expensive tickets in the NHL at an average of $226.13.

Tickets for a potential Flyers/Rangers Game 7 at Madison Square Garden would blow these two games out of the water, however. With a current average price of $410.07 on the secondary market, it would be by far the most expensive Game 7 by nearly $200. Despite a price decline of 2.4% in the past 24 hours, this figure is still more than double the price of tickets for the deciding game of Wild/Avalanche.

Of course, the Rangers and their fans are certainly accustomed to high ticket prices, but also holding out hope the series doesn't have to see a seventh game. After being one of the most expensive tickets in the NHL throughout the regular season, NY Rangers playoff tickets are also among the league?s most expensive.

While a Game 7 at MSG would easily be the most expensive average price of this series, it currently only has a 21.02% premium over the series average, the lowest of this year?s Game 7s. For more on current prices, check out the TiqIQ blog.
