BROOKLYN, N.Y., April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- NYU WIRELESS and Ericsson Incorporated announced that the technology firm joined the university center as an affiliate sponsor of research exploring a new generation of wireless technologies, also known as "5G."
New York University's Polytechnic School of Engineering launched NYU WIRELESS in August 2012. Focused on mass-deployable wireless devices across a wide range of applications and markets, NYU WIRELESS is the first university center to combine wireless, computing, and medical applications research. NYU WIRELESS includes more than 20 faculty members and 100 graduate students from the NYU School of Engineering Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and the NYU Langone School of Medicine.
"We are pleased to have Ericsson join the NYU WIRELESS industrial affiliate program and welcome its participation," said Professor Theodore (Ted) Rappaport, NYU WIRELESS Director and founder. "Our students will benefit from working alongside this global innovator and leader in network infrastructure technology and wireless services." Rappaport holds the David Lee/Ernst Weber Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the NYU School of Engineering, as well as appointments at Courant and the department of Radiology at NYU Langone Medical Center.
"We see NYU Wireless as an important partner in the research towards the development of global 5G standards," said Dr. Magnus Frodigh, Director of Wireless Access Networks Research at Ericsson Research. "Academia and industry are currently ramping up the research efforts, and we expect that the collaboration with NYU WIRELESS students and faculty will not only contribute with solid research results, but also generate creativity, insights and requirements from the highly dynamic and innovative U.S. wireless marketplace."Ericsson is the ninth major international technology firm to join NYU WIRELESS as an affiliate sponsor. Each company assigns two members to the research center's industrial affiliates' board, ensuring an unusually deep, cooperative relationship. These board members keep faculty and students informed about industry needs and provide employment opportunities for students, and the academicians and students bring innovative ideas into the affiliate companies of NYU WIRELESS. Industrial affiliate sponsors gain early access to NYU WIRELESS research and often work with students and faculty on directed research projects, and they frequently hire NYU School of Engineering students into positions of technical leadership.
