Do companies with happy employees outperform their peers?

James Dennin, Kapitall: How important is company culture? Does investing in happy employees pay off?

Company culture doesn't have a field on the balance sheet. It's hard, if not impossible, to qualify it. What works for some people won't work for others.

And yet it's also something that can really move the needle for companies large and small. A good office culture can encourage workers to spend more time innovating around the workplace. A nice work-life balance is more likely to motivate employees for a long time, saving money on recruitment and training.

Some companies take office culture innovation to the next level.

Google (GOOG),  for instance, has a mandated "20% policy," where employees have time to work on independent projects. They don't even have to be product-related: Google's shuttle bus system for commuters was developed during this "down time."

To say nothing of Gmail and Adsense.

Companies are becoming more thoughtful with ways to develop different kinds of stimulating office cultures. There's the marketing startup Hubstop, whose viral deck on their company culture inspired off-shoots at places like Netflix (NFLX).

This has encouraged a lot of startups to be more audacious in how they organize their workplaces. dPop, an interior design company based in Detroit, has an open-door policy where anyone is allowed to use the space (and the company wi-fi.)

We decided to build a list of stocks that seem to be doing a good job of creating a good work culture by looking at the employee satisfaction ratings on Glassdoor. We built a list of the 5 publicly traded companies that make Glassdoor's top 10 list for office culture.
