How Elon Musk and Tesla Are Making the Model S Even Safer

Updated from 9:39 a.m. to include comments from Kelly Blue analyst in the sixth paragraph.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- In an effort to make the Model S even safer, Tesla Motors (TSLA) is adding a titanium underbody shield and aluminum deflector plates to all new cars, manufactured effective March 6.

In a blog post to Medium, Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted that because of the negative press Tesla received due to car fires last year, Tesla would be adding a triple body undershield to the Model S to bring the risk of a fire in a Model S, "down to virtually zero to give Model S owners complete peace of mind."

Musk said that during 152 vehicle level tests "the shields prevented any damage that could cause a fire or penetrate the existing quarter inch of ballistic grade aluminum armor plate that already protects the battery pack. We have tried every worst case debris impact we can think of, including hardened steel structures set in the ideal position for a piking event, essentially equivalent to driving a car at highway speed into a steel spear braced on the tarmac."

Tesla has come under scrutiny concerning the safety of the cars, which has led to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducting a probe,at Tesla's request over the safety of the car. The NHTSA previously awarded the Model S its highest ever safety rating.

A look on NHTSA's website shows the Tesla probe is now closed, and was first spotted by Street Insider. Tesla still had not returned a request for comment asking whether the shields and plates were part of a recommendation by the NHTSA.

Karl Brauer, senior analyst at Kelley Blue Book, noted that the additions reduce the chance for battery pack issues. "Tesla has added substantial protective measures to the underbody of the Model S," Brauer said in an emailed statement. "This combination of upgraded materials should further reduce the chance of a battery pack puncture. Given that no punctures have been reported over the past 4 months, even without the added protection, this fix should eliminate the potential of a battery-pack fire under all but the most extreme circumstances."

Though the probe by the NHTSA is still open, Tesla has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), noting the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company would not have to issue any recalls.

For cars that have been manufactured prior to March 6, 2014, Tesla service will retrofit the shields, free of charge, upon request or as part of a normally scheduled service.

Musk noted that the odds of a fire in the electric Model S were extremely low at 1 in 8,000 vehicles. By comparison, there were more than 200,000 car fires last year from internal combustion engine vehicles in North America alone.

Shares of Tesla were higher in Friday trading, gaining 3.59% to $214.76.

The shields are made up of three parts. The first is rounded, hollow aluminum bar designed to deflect objects or absorb the impact pushing it past the battery pack. The second is a titanium plate, which prevents sensitive underbody parts from being damaged and aids in neutralizing the debris. The last part is a shallow angle, solid aluminum extrusion "that further absorbs impact energy, provides another layer of deflection and finally causes the Model S to ramp up and over the object if it is essentially incompressible and immovable."

Musk provided these images to showcase the new titanium plates in action.

Musk noted that the shields have only a 0.1% impact on range and don't affect the driving of the cars. Tesla did wind tunnel testing, which showed there was no discernible change in drag or lift following the addition of the plates.

Even though Tesla has added the plates, Musk was emphatic that they were not needed for a high level of safety but more for cutting out public misconception.

"However, there is significant value to minimizing owner inconvenience in the event of an impact and addressing any lingering public misperception about electric vehicle safety. With a track record of zero deaths or serious, permanent injuries since our vehicles went into production six years ago, there is no safer car on the road than a Tesla. The addition of the underbody shields simply takes it a step further," he said.
