Apple Reported to Launch MacBook Air With Retina Display Later This Year

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - Shipments of Apple's (AAPL - Get Report) MacBook have fallen "significantly" according to Digitimes, a publication known for its spotty sourcing.

MacBook shipments for 2014 may fall to 10 million units or even less, down approximately 15% from 12 million shipments in 2013, according to Digitimes, citing some Taiwan-based supply chain makers.

The computer's shipments were as expected in January and February, but Apple has "significantly decreased shipments in March," the publication says. But those numbers might not be accurate because other Taiwan-based supply makers said Apple will be launching a new model, a MacBook Air with Retina display, in the second half of 2014, the article noted. In addition, Apple will also reportedly launch a larger 12-inch iPad in the second half of the year, according to the publication. Digitimes says Quanta Computer will be responsible for the production.

Apple could not be immediately reached for comment for this story.

The news comes as speculation heats up as to when Apple will be launching its latest iPhone model, which some are dubbing the iPhone 6. UBS analyst Steven Milunovich said earlier this week that iPhone demand could "surprise to the upside" in the back half of the year from the launch of the newest model as well as demanding increasing from the China Mobile (CHL) deal.
