Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, were the most generous American donors of 2013, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

Zuckerberg and his wife donated 18 million shares of Facebook stock to a Silicon Valley nonprofit in December. The stock was valued at about $992 million. The Chronicle of Philanthropy called the donation the largest charitable gift on record in 2013 -- making the couple No. 1 one on the publication's list of the 50 most generous donors that year.

Other notable philanthropists include the late George Mitchell, founder of Texas-based oil and gas company Mitchell Energy and Development, which was sold to Devon Energy in 2002.  Mitchell, who died at 94 in July, comes in second on The Chronicle of Philanthropy's list, after leaving about $750 million to the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation, which supports a variety of nonprofits in Texas.

Coming in third, Phil and Penelope Knight. Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike, gave $500 million to the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation for a multi-year project expanding research and early detection of deadly cancers.

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg made The Chronicle's list at No. 4, having donated $452 million last year to various arts, education, environment and public health groups and programs.

Rounding out the top five, John Arnold, founder of hedge fund Centaurus Energy, and his wife, Laura.  The couple donated a total of $296.2 million last year, most of which went to the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, which supports scientific research, public education, criminal justice and public policies.

All in all, The Chronicle said the 50 most generous donors of 2013 gave $7.7 billion to non-profits in 2013, with higher education and family foundations receiving the most money.  In New York, I'm Brittany Umar for TheStreet.
