3 Credit Cards to Travel With in 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- How can you get the best deal on an airline credit card?

CreditCardChaser.com identifies the best airline credit cards, where the end game is simple: Earn as many free travel rewards and frequent-flier points as possible.

The site breaks down the airline credit card market into three categories:

Cards with frequent-flier miles. These cards enable consumers to earn frequent-flier miles with a specific airline.

Cards with travel rewards points. These cards are used to accumulate rewards points for travel, especially for auto rentals and hotel stays.

Cards geared toward consumer airline miles. A "one size fits all card," consumer airline cards can be applied to all of the above -- air travel, hotels and car rentals.

Taking all three credit card categories into its research, the site says these are the best U.S. airline credit cards in 2014:

U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards. With this card, card customers can earn one so-called "flex-point" for every $1 of eligible net purchases made on the card. Cardholders can also earn two flexpoints for every dollar spent on gasoline, food and airline tickets and three flexpoints on charitable donations.

Consumers can also earn 20,000 bonus points after the first $3,500 in net purchases in the first 150 days, and there's a zero-percent intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months. Finally, the annual fee is waived the first year.

BarclayCard Arrival World MasterCard. Cardholders can earn 2x on all purchases with the BarclayCard, along with the potential to earn 40,000 bonus points if they spend $1,000 or more using the card in the first 90 days of ownership. Cardholders also earn 10% miles back for travel purchases, and the card offers a zero-percent APR for the first year of ownership.

American Express Blue Sky. Amex Blue Sky cardholders can earn one point for every dollar spent on eligible purchases and redeem 7,500 points for a $100 credit toward any airline ticket, hotel stay, car rental or cruise. If cardholders spend $1,000 in the first 90 days of ownership, they earn an extra 7,500 bonus points. The card also offers a zero-percent APR for the first 15 months of card ownership.

In general, to get the best deals on airline credit cards, you want to get what the above cards offer: a bonus for signing up, points per dollars spent and relatively low spending minimums.

Get all of those benefits and you've got a good airline card in your hands -- and more money in your bank account.
