Ultra HDTVs Will Be Big News at CES

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- The big news coming from the electronics' industry gathering in Las Vegas in January should involve the next generation of high-definition TVs coming to market. The emphasis will be on the term "big." Both LG and Samsung reportedly each will announce super-large, 105-inch curved-screen, 4K, Ultra HD televisions.

LG said it will be showing what it's calling "the largest curved TV ever" at CES 2014. The new 105UB9 will measure 105-inches diagonally (21:9 CinemaScope proportions) and is capable of providing 11 million pixels in a 5120 x 2160 resolution. Instead of using OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, enngineers decided on TFT (Thin Film Transistors) for better color accuracy across such a large screen.

LG modestly boasted its new TV's picture quality is "astounding."

Not to be outdone by its South Korean rival, Samsung also announced a 105-inch Curved UHD TV it plans to introduce at CES. The specifications are identical to LG's big HDTV.

Of course, Samsung said it believes its version is superior because it "adopts a new proprietary picture quality algorithm that delivers optimized color and greater feeling of depth."

Expect at least one new stream of 4K UHD programming to be announced at CES as well. Netflix  (NFLX) will reportedly introduce a 4K service for TV shows and movies. The new stream will only be accessible through specific 4K TV and at some point in the future to gaming devices like Sony's (SNE) PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox One.

One last CES introduction rumor of note:  LG is expected to release its first "smart TV" based on webOS. LG purchased the Palm-developed software from Hewlett Packard (HPQ) more than a year ago. This is LGs first use of the operating system.

What was once called the Consumer Electronics Show is now officially known as International CES. It runs from Jan. 7 to Jan. 10.
