[video] New Survey: Guys Are Bigger Potheads Than Gals

Stocks in this article: TST

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- When it comes to marijuana, it turns out men are bigger potheads than women. There is also a generational difference that would cause Nancy Reagan to shake her head in dismay.

If buying pot were legal, men would buy it just about anywhere, whereas women think it should only be sold in certain places. According to a recent survey by TheStreet, both genders agreed legal marijuana should be  available in pharmacies or marijuana dispensaries. But beyond those locations, the genders differed dramatically.

Men clearly see buying pot at a liquor store, the height of convenience, with 43% in favor. A bottle of tequila and some Acapulco Gold, please. Only 34% of women think this is such a good idea.

The results split even more over the idea of selling pot at a coffee shop, with men favoring this option twice as much as women. Talk about saving time, 18% of men thinks it's OK to pick up some weed at the supermarket, vs. only 7% of women. Beer aisle? Behind the counter with cigarettes? How about produce, next to the other greens?

Men and women equally favored the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes. However when it came to recreational use, both genders opposed it. Even though the sexes are in agreement on this, more men than women favored the legalization of recreational pot, with 33% of the guys say heck yeah, compared to only 22% of women.

When TheStreet asked if small possession amounts of marijuana should be legal, 49% of men said yes, while only 36% of women think a small stash is OK.

There are areas where they agree. The genders are on the same page when it comes to the legal age for buying pot. They equally think 21 and older is the right age. They both agree that if marijuana were legal beyond medicinal purposes, it should be regulated like alcohol.

But age makes a difference in how readers regard pot issues. Nancy Reagan would be horrified to learn that the generation raised on "Just Say No" thinks small amounts of marijuana are OK. Fifty-seven percent of those under the age of 34 believe the sale and possession of small quantities of pot should be legal, whereas less than 40% of the flower power generation thinks it's OK.

Apparently the D.A.R.E. programs are a waste of time because 38% of those between the ages of 18 and 24 favor recreational pot, while only 15% over the age of 65 do. Over half of those between the ages of 18 and 34 like the idea of medicinal marijuana, while only 45% over the age of 65 are sold on the alternative medicine.
