FirstEnergy Awards Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics Grants To 21 Ohio Teachers

AKRON, Ohio, Nov. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy (NYSE: FE) has named 21 Ohio teachers as winners of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education grants.  The grants, up to $500 each, will be used for a variety of hands-on projects, workshops and teacher development programs throughout the school year.

This year's grant winners include:

  • Kimberly Bigioini, Ph.D., Phoenix Academy, Toledo
  • Deb Carper and Louise Lowenstein, Toledo Technology Academy, Toledo
  • Debbie Dodson, Greater Summit County Early Learning Center, Akron
  • Samantha Dunaway, SCOPE Academy, Akron
  • Terri Fleming, Trumbull Career and Technical Center, Warren
  • Richard Gash, Boy Scouts of America Sea Scout Ship 41, Bay Village
  • Nechelle M. Grant, Delta Academy – Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Akron
  • Kevin James, The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland
  • Lisa Kimevski, Turkeyfoot Elementary School, Coventry
  • Sandra Lepi, Saint Albert the Great School, North Royalton

"FirstEnergy is proud to award these grants to our winning teachers to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics instruction for their students," said Dee Lowery, vice president of Corporate Affairs and Community Involvement and president of the FirstEnergy Foundation.  "We had a group of very competitive applications to choose from this year."

FirstEnergy offers grants up to $500 to individual teachers and administrators at schools served by its electric utility operating companies and in communities where it has facilities.  

Grant recipients are recommended by local educators who make up FirstEnergy's Educational Advisory Council.  As part of the program, recipients must furnish a written summary and evaluation of their projects that can be shared with other educators in FirstEnergy's service area.
