FRC Expresses Disappointment In Senate Vote On ENDA

WASHINGTON, Nov. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Family Research Council (FRC) President Tony Perkins expressed strong disagreement with the U.S. Senate vote for cloture on the so-called "Employment Non-Discrimination Act" (ENDA), a bill that mandates special rights based on sexuality. Businesses would be forced to comply (or face penalties), regardless of the impact on their organization. Family Research Council Action (FRC Action) will score the legislation in its annual vote scorecard.

FRC President Tony Perkins released the following statement in response to the Senate vote:

"We are disappointed the U.S. Senate voted for cloture on ENDA, legislation that would increase litigation, diminish religious liberty, and create a new federal mandate on businesses based on sexuality. The law would not allow businesses, including schools and daycares, to take things into consideration when they think it is appropriate. Even faith-based organizations and businesses will be ordered to comply (or face penalties), regardless of the impact on their organization.

"However, we are pleased that Speaker Boehner announced his opposition today to ENDA. As he noted, ENDA would increase costly lawsuits that burden businesses in an already struggling economy.

"Unfortunately, the U.S. Senate failed to recognize how ENDA undermines the free exercise of religion. The Senate didn't even offer a fig leaf of 'religious exemptions' that would supposedly protect faith-based organizations. Instead, they seem content to follow the Obamacare model of forced conformity – or punishment.

"We are confident that the U.S. House of Representatives will ultimately reject ENDA because it not only threatens the free market but religious liberties as well," concluded Perkins.
