iPhone Bonanza: 5s, 5c in Hot Demand (Update 1)

Updated from 8:41 a.m. EDT to provide company comments in the 13th paragraph.

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Big opening weekends are usually reserved for blockbuster movies, video game sales, and Apple (AAPL - Get Report) iPhone sales. Judging by tweets, pictures and Apple's Web site, this is going to be another blockbuster.

Apple's iPhone 5s and 5c officially went on sale at 8 a.m. Friday, as Apple Stores around the world began selling the latest iPhone models.

Pre-orders for the 5s started at 12:01 a.m. on Apple's Web site, while pre-orders for the 5c started last Friday.

Judging by Apple's website, the gold iPhone 5s appears to be in incredible demand. According to Apple's Web site, ship dates for the major carriers - Verizon (VZ), AT&T (T), Sprint (S) and T-Mobile USA (TMUS), all show a ship date of October. Space grey and graphite are showing availability in 7-10 business days.

Availability on the lower-cost iPhone 5c is better, with Apple's Web site showing an availability to ship of 1-3 business days for all colors and all carriers. The iPhone 5c is available in white, pink, yellow, blue and green.

Analysts are expecting a monster opening weekend for Apple, with many expecting the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech titan to sell/ship around 6 million iPhone units this weekend. Apple traditionally puts out a press release announcing how many units were shipped or sold during its opening weekend. Earlier this week, Wall Street became concerned that Apple did not put out a press release, as this was the first time Apple debuted two phones, launching the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s.

Though Apple has not issued a press release yet, an Apple representative told AllThingsD demand "has been incredible" for the new iPhones.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s at an event Sept. 10 at its Cupertino, Calif., headquarters, where it demonstrated several of the new features. The primary feature on the 5s is TouchID, allowing users to unlock their phones with their fingerprints. TouchID also works with iTunes purchases, something many believe is Apple's move into the mobile payments space.

In addition to unveiling the new iPhones, Apple also released the new version of its mobile operating system, iOS 7, earlier this week. The new iOS is a radical redesign from its predecessors, showcasing flatter designs, a vast new color scheme, iTunes Radio and several other new features.

Website iFixit has already done a teardown of the new iPhone 5s, revealing which companies and chipsets are inside Apple's latest offering.

Shares of Apple jumped in early morning trading, gaining 0.7% to $475.70 amid the frenzied environment surround the new iPhone releases.
