Elon Musk and the Traveling Model S

Stocks in this article: TSLA NSANY

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Tesla Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk is putting his money where his mouth his, as he plans to drive cross-country in a Model S.

Earlier this year, Musk said that he was planning a family vacation driving across the country, using only Supercharger stations, to demonstrate that range anxiety no longer exists for electric vehicles, specifically the Model S.

Since Tesla unveiled the Supercharger network earlier this year, Tesla has been pushing the notion that the Model S can be driven like any other car, across the country, with no worries about it running out of juice. The battery range on the Model S is 265 miles, and with Musk saying that it will take an average of 1.5 hours per day to charge the car to drive it across the country, that should put to rest any worries consumers might have about driving an electric vehicle.

According to Tesla's Web site, there are 19 stations currently, and by the fall of 2013, "most metropolitan areas" will have one. By the winter of this year, Tesla says "coast-to-coast travel" is an option, so Musk is once again exceeding expectations, showing this can be done earlier than Tesla initially said. In 2014, Supercharger networks will cover 80% of the US population and parts of Canada. By 2015, 98% of the U.S. population and parts of Canada will be covered.

Tesla's service, innovation, and incredibly popular Model S have made the car and the company the most popular electric vehicle on social media. There have been close to 50,000 mentions on social media of the Model S, compared to just 6,261 mentions of the next most-popular electric vehicle, the Nissan (NSANY) Leaf.

The BMW i3, which Musk poked fun at during a recent Tesla earnings call, is third on the list with just 1,448 mentions on social media. BMW unveiled the i3 earlier this summer.
