Republican Women Respond To Department Of Education's Defense Of Race-Based Standards
TUSCALOOSA, Ala., July 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In response to swelling criticism about race-based standards in Alabama's eight-year strategic K-12 plan that implements Common Core, the Alabama Superintendent of Education released a statement of "leading African-American Education Policy Professionals," who support his Plan 2020. The Alabama Federation of Republican Women (AFRW) quickly responded.
AFRW president Elois Zeanah stated, "How would these educators and legislators react if they were treated by a physician, represented by an attorney, or taught by someone who had learned in school that it doesn't matter if they got the wrong answer, all that matters are the feelings and the reasoning that went into those answers."
AFRW's Education Chair Lisa Harris added, "I wonder how many Alabama educators and legislators understand the shift in focus away from learning academic content to explaining the methodology of how students got an answer regardless of whether it was right or wrong. It is a focus of process over product. I wouldn't want to have a surgeon who knew many techniques but never correctly performed the procedure."
State School Superintendent Dr. Bice sent out the release to counter criticism of Plan 2020, that was released recently and holds different standards for whites, Hispanics, American Indians and Asian/Pacific Islanders.Harris stated, "I can't believe educators and legislators who give unqualified support for Plan 2020 understand how Common Core dumbs down education. I'm especially surprised that black professionals would support race-based standards in any form or in any disguise which discriminate against and stereotype certain 'subgroups' listed in the Plan. As a former teacher, I can tell you that all of the progress made since the infamous 'separate but equal' policies of the 1950's is now being reversed by the Common Core national standards currently being imposed by State Superintendents around the country."
