ITT Exelis (
NYSE:XLS) has been selected by Raytheon Company to supply antenna subsystems for the
Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) program. The Exelis antennas will be fielded as part of SM-3 Block IIA, a cooperative development program between the U.S. Department of Defense and the Ministry of Defense of Japan, scheduled to be deployed in 2018.
Employed as part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System, the SM-3 will provide interception capability against short, medium and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
Under the contract, valued at $2.96 million, Exelis will produce conformal, multifunction apertures to provide navigation, multiple data link and flight-termination capabilities for the missiles. This will help improve accuracy and communications during flight while maintaining crew safety in the event of an emergency termination. Delivery of the Exelis antennas is expected to begin this year and continue through mid-2015.
“Our antennas enable the Standard Missile-3 to stay on target, protecting U.S. and allied territories and forces from incoming ballistic threats,” said Paul Eyring, senior director of programs for antennas, sensors and microelectronics for Exelis Electronic Systems. “Effective missile defense is critical to global security, and Exelis is proud to be supporting this effort.”
Each of the Exelis-supplied antenna suites includes seven multifunction antennas, and Exelis is responsible for qualification testing, manufacturing and delivery. Work under the contract will be performed at the Exelis Electronic Systems facility in Bohemia, N.Y.
