Aaron Hernandez: Where From Here? (Update 1)

Updated from 11:12 a.m. EST to reflect the charges brought against Hernandez.

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- All of #PatriotsNation saw this coming. We just didn't think it would happen.

Anybody who knows me or follows me on Twitter (shameless plug) knows I'm a huge New England Patriots fan. I bleed blue and red all year long, and Tom Brady and Bill Belichick can do no wrong in my eyes.

That doesn't mean everyone else is safe, though.

Former Patriots Tight End Aaron Hernandez was arrested this morning, due in part to his connection with the Odin Lloyd murder that happened last week. Hours later, Hernandez was released from the team, throwing the Pats into an even greater state of flux.

Lloyd's body was found near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, MA., and since then, Hernandez has been a person of interest in the matter. There were reports Hernandez scrubbed his house following the murder, and had security equipment destroyed, which in my eyes are the actions of someone who knows more than he's let on.

Update: Hernandez has since been charged with five gun counts, and one count of murder. He pleaded not guilty to all of these charges.

I'll let the law handle Hernandez. As a Patriot fan, this is devastating news, especially in light of the recent turmoil the team has faced on offense. The Patriots responded as they should, releasing the player from the team. Some things are bigger than football, and this is clearly one of those cases.

"A young man was murdered last week and we extend our sympathies to the family and friends who mourn his loss," the Patriots said in a statement following the release. "Words cannot express the disappointment we feel knowing that one of our players was arrested as a result of this investigation. We realize that law enforcement investigations into this matter are ongoing. We support their efforts and respect the process. At this time, we believe this transaction is simply the right thing to do."

Wes Welker left to go to the Denver Broncos for essentially the same contract the Patriots offered, but Welker felt dissed by Patriots management, and his 118 catches are no longer in Foxboro. Wide Receiver Brandon Lloyd, he of the quirky personality but sure hands, was released earlier this year.
