NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- ALCO Stores (Nasdaq:ALCS) has been upgraded by TheStreet Ratings from sell to hold. The company's strengths can be seen in multiple areas, such as its revenue growth, growth in earnings per share and increase in net income. However, as a counter to these strengths, we also find weaknesses including disappointing return on equity, poor profit margins and weak operating cash flow.

Highlights from the ratings report include:

  • ALCS's revenue growth has slightly outpaced the industry average of 6.2%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 8.4%. Growth in the company's revenue appears to have helped boost the earnings per share.
  • ALCO STORES INC reported significant earnings per share improvement in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. During the past fiscal year, ALCO STORES INC increased its bottom line by earning $0.52 versus $0.48 in the prior year.
  • The debt-to-equity ratio is somewhat low, currently at 0.78, and is less than that of the industry average, implying that there has been a relatively successful effort in the management of debt levels. Even though the company has a strong debt-to-equity ratio, the quick ratio of 0.29 is very weak and demonstrates a lack of ability to pay short-term obligations.
  • The gross profit margin for ALCO STORES INC is currently lower than what is desirable, coming in at 28.40%. It has decreased from the same quarter the previous year. Along with this, the net profit margin of 1.34% trails that of the industry average.
  • Net operating cash flow has significantly decreased to $4.20 million or 80.06% when compared to the same quarter last year. In addition, when comparing to the industry average, the firm's growth rate is much lower.
.

ALCO Stores, Inc. operates as a regional broad line retailer in the central United States. The company has a P/E ratio of 19.4, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7.
