US$79,850 grant from UPS helps develop holistic curriculum
MISSISSAUGA, ON, May 22, 2013 /CNW/ - UPSers and Carmelina's Home gathered together to celebrate a US$79,850 grant presentation on Friday, May 17, courtesy of The UPS Foundation.
"Giving back to the communities where we live and work is at the foundation of UPS. We are pleased to present this grant to Carmelina's Home, an organization that is actively improving its programs to better serve its residents," said Michael Tierney, President, UPS Canada. "At UPS, we have long believed in the commitment to supporting our communities through a balance of financial contributions and hands-on volunteering."
Carmelina's Home is a long-term residential therapeutic community based program for women with addictions, substance abuse and emotional issues. Residents attend daily group therapy meetings and participate in one-on-one therapeutic sessions as needed. The current program consists of four, six-month phases and a one-month orientation phase. Residents live at Carmelina's Home for a total of 25 months."The grant from The UPS Foundation will significantly impact the sustainability and longevity of program delivery at Carmelina's Home for years to come," said Martin Riley, President, Carmelina's Home. "Carmelina's Home is dependent upon community support for its survival; thanks UPS for this wonderful and significant financial contribution." The UPS grant money will be used to help develop, document and implement a holistic treatment curriculum to support the on-going delivery of the therapeutic program at Carmelina's Home. The program curriculum is currently dependent upon the existing resources and the people who deliver the program. This is a significant operational issue for program sustainability. Carmelina's Home opened in 1997 and operates in Toronto. The program is open to all women dealing with addictions and substance abuse issues who are looking to transform and change their lives. Organizations are nominated for grants by UPS employees and must have benefited from 50 hours of hands-on volunteering from UPS employees to qualify. UPS Canada employees volunteered more than 34,950 hours to more than 400 charitable organizations across Canada in 2012.
