AUBURN, Maine, April 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A classic chair designed by the founder of Thos. Moser handcrafted American furniture from Maine is featured prominently in the new George W. Bush Presidential Center, being dedicated today in Dallas, Texas. Designed by Tom Moser in 1990, the Harpswell Chair resides in the Bush Institute's Periodical Library, along with custom reading tables also crafted by the company at its Maine workshop. Former Presidents Carter, Bush and Clinton along with George W. Bush, Laura Bush and President Obama will sit in Harpswell chairs during the nationally televised live dedication ceremony. The Center, located on the campus of Southern Methodist University, opens to the public May 1.
The Presidential Center was designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects while notable design firms Gensler and Blasingame worked closely with Thos. Moser to specify furniture that would complement the aesthetics of the Presidential Center.
The Harpswell Chair is the same piece of furniture used at the White House for the former president's visit with then Pope Benedict XVI in 2008. These chairs are now on display in the museum at the George W. Bush Presidential Center which also houses other artifacts from the presidency.
"It is an honor that my family-owned company was selected to build beautiful, sustainable pieces for the George W. Bush Presidential Center," said Aaron Moser, director of Contract for Thos. Moser. "From the beginning our furniture has been designed to marry art with function and certainly the Harpswell Chair is reminiscent of that aesthetic, so it's fitting that it is now an enduring part of the Presidential Center."Crafted from American black cherry harvested from the Allegheny forest in Pennsylvania, the Harpswell Chair features a back crest that is carved from a single piece of cherry to reveal a grain pattern that is unique to each piece, and can be specified with or without arms or an upholstered back. In additional to Harpswell Chairs, Thos. Moser was commissioned to design and build custom furniture for three of the most prestigious areas of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. In the National Archives portion of the Center, Moser provided a custom proctor's desk, conference tables, research desks and credenzas, all made from American black cherry. Large conference tables and credenzas were crafted for the conference rooms in the George W. Bush Foundation portion of the Center. For visitors utilizing the Center's public spaces, Thos. Moser provided 16-foot custom benches outside an auditorium and several conference tables.
