1973 to 2013, Muller to Messi, Glam Rock to Hip-Hop, flared jeans to skinny jeans, long shag hairstyle to the quiff and fade. Much has changed, been replaced or died away over the past 40 years but one thing conceived in '73, evolving constantly, improving, showing no signs of being ousted and in 2013, still remaining stronger than ever on its 40 year anniversary - Slaters.
What gives special significance to this Ruby Anniversary? It's a landmark to be respected, a sign of achievement and a symbol of maturity. It is all of these things but much more. A company that has not only survived but thrived for so long: 40years is a sign of fortitude and unity as we maintain our fine reputation and are still regarded with the highest credibility.
From humble beginnings Ralph Slaters factory shop with its small band of loyal customers operated from the Howard Street premises. The former manufacturer had the formula of keeping overheads low and pricing low as well as great customer service down to a fine art. The savings were passed onto the customers. That mixed in with the free alteration service on items like
, completed an unbeatable package of price, choice, quality and service. These foundations are still evident in the business today as the company has gone from strength to strength and now have 23 stores all over the U.K. Until the introduction of the Ladies wear department which was heavily requested for by our female shoppers, Slater's
branch held the Guinness World Title for being the 'Biggest Menswear Store in the World'.
In the words of the Managing Director
, son of Ralph, addressed company-wide: 'Anyone remember 1973? That was the year that the late great
. 40 years. I'll say it again 40 years!!! 90% of businesses that started in 1973 are no longer operating! My father would have been very proud of you all.'
This epitomises the family environment still experienced in the store. Still family run and one of most important aspects of the business is still priding itself on the good, old fashion customer service. Here's to the next 40 years!
