Navy League To Honor Prominent Industry, Navy, City And Financial Leaders At Their 111th Annual Dinner In New York City

NEW YORK, April 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Thursday, April 18 th, the Navy League of the United States New York Council will honor the following individuals at its 111 th Annual Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria New York:

Daniel F. Akerson, chairman and chief executive officer, General Motors Company Admiral William E. Gortney, U.S. Navy, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command Honorable Raymond W. Kelly, Commissioner, New York City Police Department Joan E. Donovan, Vice President, Merrill Lynch Wealth Management

"We are extremely pleased to recognize these individuals," stated Rear Admiral J. Robert Lunney, NYNM (Ret.) president of the New York Council. "They represent the finest qualities of leadership, and have significantly contributed to the nation and the nation's sea services," he added. The Navy League was formed 111 years ago in New York City with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt

The dinner supports the Navy League, New York Council's efforts for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. The Council's activities include educating the public on the need for a strong Navy, morale enhancement, recognition events and family support programs and scholarships. The Council welcomes thousands of sailors to New York's annual Fleet Week each year. 

The New York Council also conducts numerous personnel support activities for adopted U.S. Navy ships, stations and for members of the sea services and they support youth through such programs as the Navy Junior Officers Training Corps, Young Marines and Naval Sea Cadet units in New York.  They conducted the commissioning of USS NEW YORK (LPD 21) and supported the establishment of a supplemental education fund for the crew, which is designed to last for the life of the ship.
