Grimsson, who is serving a record fifth term as
's president, will announce a new assembly of Arctic nations to convene for the first time in
in October. The group will address critical issues facing the region, including melting sea ice, weather patterns, food security, energy resource extraction and shipping lanes.
Grimsson's long career in politics began after he became the first person from
to earn a Ph.D. in political science. He served for decades in
's legislature as a member of the People's Alliance Party. From 1988 to 1991, he served as
's finance minister.
