The Governor-General Of Australia And The Government Of Canada Pay Tribute To Canadian Veterans And Canadian Armed Forces Personnel
OTTAWA, April 5, 2013 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Honorable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister for La Francophonie, Parliamentary Secretary Eve Adams today joined Her Excellency Ms. Quentin Bryce AC CVO, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, at the National War Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of Canadian Veterans and Canadian Armed Forces personnel.
"Members of the Canadian Armed Forces are recognized around the world for their commitment to upholding the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law" said Minister Blaney. "Today, the Governor-General of Australia saluted Canada's proud international military reputation by paying tribute to those Canadians who served with our allies in troubled regions far from home."
Canada and Australia have a common bond through their shared military heritage that goes as far back as the South African War. During the First and Second World Wars, Australia and Canada, both being dominions of the United Kingdom at the time, were allies fighting a common enemy. Because of their historical and political linkages, they shared common wartime experiences that sometimes brought them together in joint military efforts.
Both countries fought alongside each other again during the Korean War. Since then, Canada and Australia have worked together during the Persian Gulf War, collaborated on multinational peace support missions in places like Somalia, Rwanda and East Timor, and been allies in the war in Afghanistan."Our Government is dedicated to ensuring that the sacrifices and contributions of our Veterans are never forgotten," said Parliamentary Secretary Eve Adams. " Canada and Australia's shared wartime experiences have further strengthened the bond between our two countries with Canadians and Australians fighting side by side in conflicts all over the world." Governor-General Bryce also signed the Livre D'Or, a special guest book for foreign dignitaries who participate in commemorative ceremonies at the National War Memorial.
