Governor Corbett Names Michael Wolf As Secretary Of Health Department

Cumberland County Man Has Been Department's Acting Secretary Since October

HARRISBURG, Pa., April 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett today named Michael Wolf as Secretary of the Department of Health.

Wolf will oversee the regulation of Pennsylvania's hospitals, nursing homes and various other health care facilities, while organizing and supporting public health initiatives and services, as well as outreach, education, prevention and preparedness activities. The department has an annual budget of more than $838 million and has approximately 1,700 employees.

"Michael has proven his ability to manage this important department and is well-respected among his colleagues,'' Corbett said. "I have confidence in his knowledge of the public health system, as well as his leadership ability and dedication to the commonwealth."

Wolf, 46, of Enola, joined the health department in May 2011 as executive deputy secretary after working as Pfizer's director of worldwide public affairs and policy.  He was named acting secretary in October 2012.

The Department of Health has been working to modernize Pennsylvania's health care system, increase access to health care in rural and underserved areas, and expand programs that help attract and retain health care practitioners.

"I am grateful to Governor Corbett for giving me this great opportunity to serve our commonwealth and honored to work alongside the employees of the Department of Health to ensure every resident has access to affordable, high-quality health care, regardless of where they reside in the commonwealth," Wolf said.

A Pennsylvania native, Wolf is a graduate of Slippery Rock University and earned his master's degree from the University of Phoenix.
