Facebook Home Event: Live Blog Recap

MENLO PARK, Calif. ( TheStreet) -- Facebook (FB) held its press event Thursday and announced Facebook Home, built of Android, making smartphones about humans first.

The social networking giant sent out invites last week which read: "Come See Our New Home on Android." Facebook built Home off Google's (GOOG) Android, keeping users on the social network by launching Chat Heads, App Drawer, Cover Feed, and Notifications.

Facebook Home will come on several different phones, the first being HTC First, which is available April 12 at AT&T (T) for $99.99. The phone can be pre-ordered starting Thursday. It will also be available on Samsung's Galaxy S4, which is due later this month.

Home is designed to keep you up to date on the people around you, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the presentation. "We think this is the best version of Facebook there is," he said. Home was designed to have smartphones, which Zuckerberg noted users check around 100 times a day, be around people, instead of apps.

Facebook Home was designed to be the best experience of any phone: Chat Heads, which allows users to connect with friends via chats or sending articles; notifications allows users to see critical updates that are important to them. Currently, there are no ads on the first version of Facebook Home, but eventually there will be, Zuckerberg noted.

During the question-and-answer session, Zuckerberg said Facebook still has a great relationship with Apple (AAPL), and the two companies plan to do more in the future, but it would be done via a partnership. Google is aware of what Facebook is doing, as Android was designed to be open.

Facebook shares were jumping after the event, gaining 3.31% to $27.12.
