Malibu Inspires, Supports Children In Need
MALIBU, Calif., March 28, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Known for great surf, movie stars and music legends, Malibu charity, Safety Harbor Kids, has managed to combine those fun and interesting elements into a thriving nonprofit helping at risk youth.
When most people think of doing charity, they envision going to the inner city, serving food or building a shelter – typical charitable activities. Malibu's charity has beach parties, fancy brunches and Hollywood-style holiday parties while helping needy kids.
At a recent event, a brunch for sixty at risk teens sponsored by support organization, Fortunate Angels, SHK invited the children to a delicious Sunday brunch at Duke's restaurant in Malibu. Safety Harbor Kids members and donors aren't serving food or working - they are dining by the sea while listening to world class guitar by the likes of Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere. At the event before that, their annual holiday party, they had Jim Belushi singing, backed by the TexiCali Horns and Grammy award winning drummer Tony Braunegal while eating a holiday meal with 150 orphans and homeless kids.
"These seem like great parties – and they are, but we actually have them to help the kids," says SHK President, Petrie Alexandra Williams. "With the help of our sponsors Cathleen Donnelly of Fortunate Angels, Duke's and Hint Water, we are bringing college, career, music and art programs to children in need." At each event SHK invites local orphans, foster and homeless children to learn music and art, hear motivational speakers and become inspired to get jobs and go to college.Founded in 2007, Safety Harbor Kids (SHK) was the dream of John Williams, a parentless child who grew up in Malibu renting a room at age sixteen. SHK has one of the lowest expense ratios in the nation and their direct, one to one, approach has attracted some big names to the charity. "People want to know their donation is having an effect," says Mr. Williams. "Donating to a large charity, like March of Dimes or Red Cross, only 5% of your money goes to the cause. With SHK, more than 60% of your money goes to the kids." On a national level, SHK is kicking off their Million Dollar Challenge to raise funds for their College, Career and the Arts Education center for the kids. SHK's next event is their 7 th Annual Luncheon and Polo Fundraiser. Visit www.safetyharborkids.org to attend, donate or sponsor a child. SOURCE Safety Harbor Kids
