Maine Sen. Angus King Reacts To Sequester On TideSmart Talk With Stevoe
FALMOUTH, Maine, March 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In an interview today with TideSmart Talk with Stevoe, a weekly radio show that takes a macro approach towards society and culture, U. S. Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) joined host Steve Woods (Stevoe) to discuss the so-called sequester, which would trigger $85 billion in automatic, across-the-board domestic and defense spending cuts set to take effect today.
The show will air Saturday, March 2, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on News Talk WLOB 1310AM and will be live streamed at http://www.wlobradio.com. A podcast will be made available via iTunes or at http://www.tidesmartradio.com.
In a 30-minute interview, the former 2-term governor told Woods that he was disappointed that Congress was unable to move forward with an alternate plan, and that he had hoped the President would have played a more active role earlier in the debate."I can tell you that there is no easy answer," King said. "That volume of cuts is going to be difficult to make without having noticeable changes with our relationship to the government." Acknowledging Congress' inability to reach an agreement, King said a balance of spending cuts and revenue generation would be needed to secure the nation's economic future. "There's plenty of blame to go around," King said. "I think there are solutions, and we're going to get there, but it's going to take some serious consequences from the sequester." Added Woods, "As Chairman of the Yarmouth Town Council, I am painfully aware of how policy decisions made in Washington, flowing through Augusta, directly impact and cause tremendous hardship for Maine communities." "I hope that Congress is able to resolve this issue of sequester so we can put our efforts and focus on taking positive steps in a way that provides economic stability and opportunity for all Mainers and Americans." During the second hour of the March 2 TideSmart Talk with Stevoe show, Woods was joined for an in-studio interview Fletcher Kittredge, CEO of GWI to discuss technological innovation in Maine, rural broadband access and the impact of government policy. Since launching TideSmart Talk with Stevoe one year ago, Woods has hosted more than 100 high-profile guests including famed attorney F. Lee Bailey, mentalist The Amazing Kreskin, two-term Maine Governor John Baldacci, Shipyard Brewing Company President Fred Forsley, longtime Maine broadcast journalist Bill Green, Portland Sea Dogs Owner Bill Burke, Portland Mayor Michael Brennan, Former Chief of Staff to Sen. Susan Collins (R- Maine) and current University of Maine Athletic Director Steve Abbott, and Maine Senate President Justin Alfond. SOURCE TideSmart
