Samsung Pitches New Galaxy, Touts TV Box

Stock quotes in this article: GOOG, AAPL

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - Samsung's commercials during Sunday's Academy Awards were plentiful, and at times, more clever than the banter on the star-splashed show. The Seoul-based company's television advertisements promoted their Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II on the notion that users will have access to unparalleled business acumen.

But Samsung waited until this morning - the start of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the industry's foremost gathering - to produce a hint of the electronic giant's ambitious plans.

Samsung said it will reveal the Galaxy S line of smartphones running on Google's (GOOG) Android platform on March 14 in New York City. The Korean tech powerhouse suggested we all get "Ready 4 The Show" in a Twitter posting which teases the next Samsung Unveiled event in less than three weeks.

The rumor mill is already churning out speculation about the Galaxy S IV - including the possibility it will feature a 5-inch touchscreen (up from 4.8-inches on the current S III) capable of 1080p, high-definition video playback as well as an updated processor and other enticing innovations.

Samsung techies spent the morning in Barcelona talking-up a global edition of its Galaxy Note 8 tablet and a new product called HomeSync, an Android-based smart TV box. In Samsung-speak, HomeSync is a "home hub solution that a shared storage fit for a family, the best entertainment experience on a big screen TV, and a new way of enjoying your HDTV through a familiar and smarter Android user experience".

It sounds like Samsung's HomeSync might be marketed as direct competition for Apple's (AAPL) ever-evolving TV device. There's nothing like lively advertisements viewed during the Oscars to attract the attention of customers -- and investors.
