Campaign To Fix The Debt Takes The Fight To Home Districts: 33 Events Across 23 States

Fix the Debt Welcomes Members of Congress Home for Presidents' Day Recess

WASHINGTON , Feb. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This week, the Campaign to Fix the Debt – a national, nonpartisan coalition of government, policy and business leaders and more than 345,000 concerned citizens, all dedicated to urging Congress to reach a bipartisan agreement to solve our national debt problems – hosted events in more than 30 congressional districts to raise awareness to the negative impacts of the national debt on local communities.

"When lawmakers returned home to their districts for Presidents' Day recess, Fix the Debt was there to welcome them and show them what is at stake if a deal to solve our nation's debt problems is not reached," said Maya MacGuineas, head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt. "The national debt is not just an 'inside the Beltway' issue. From defense contractors in Maryland and manufacturers in Arizona to college students in Maine, the debt affects everyone and Congress needs to hear their perspectives."

Events were hosted by Fix the Debt state chapters and included the involvement of local business leaders, academics, students and community leaders. They ranged from small business tours to roundtable discussions. Highlights from the week include:

  • Arizona —State steering committee member and owner of Pivot Manufacturing Rick Murray hosted U.S. Rep. Matt Salmon for a factory tour and roundtable discussion.
  • Michigan —Steering committee members and small business owners met with U.S. Rep. Dan Benishek and U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg.  Steering committee member and State Senator Roger Kahn spoke at the Marquette Economic Club and met with university and community leaders at an event at Northern Michigan University.
  • Colorado — In Denver, steering committee members met with U.S. Senator Mark Udall for an hour-long roundtable discussion and organized a town hall meeting with U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman and community and business leaders.
  • South Carolina —U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson toured Smitty's Print Shop and participated in a Q & A session with members of Fix the Debt and the local business community.
  • Wisconsin —Mike White, owner of The Pizza Pit and a steering committee member, hosted U.S. Rep. Ron Kind for a roundtable discussion with the Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce Wisconsin co-chairs former U.S. Rep. Scott Klug and former Gov. Tony Earl.

Through grassroots organizing, earned media activities and high-profile outreach in 23 state chapters, the Campaign to Fix the Debt is urging lawmakers to set aside political differences to formulate practical solutions to our nation's debt problems.
