Congressman Fattah Will Join Secretary Arne Duncan On National Education Commission Press Call

WASHINGTON, Feb. 18, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA-02), the leading Congressional advocate for equitable distribution of educational resources, will join Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on a press call Tuesday to discuss the final report of the U.S. Equity and Excellence Commission, which Fattah helped to launch in Congress.

Media members, especially those reporting on education, are invited to participate Tuesday Feb. 19 at 12:45 p.m. The Teleconference dial-in is 1-888-352-6796, passcode 9820224. Or Log in online to www.hostcontrols.com, passcode 9820224.

The Equity and Education Commission, which held hearings in major U.S. cities including Philadelphia over the past two years, is releasing its final report, "For Each and Every Child: A Strategy for Education Equity and Excellence." The report examines disparities in educational opportunities that give rise to achievement gaps and recommends ways to address those inequalities.

Fattah, early in the Obama Administration, met with the President and urged him to appoint a commission to examine and make recommendations on educational reform and equity proposals, which grew into the Equity and Excellence Commission.

"The Commission's final report represents a significant milestone in the historic effort to close the achievement gap between rich and poor school districts – as well as among schools within a given district, that has plagued our nation's public education system," Fattah said.

The Commission is the brainchild of Congressmen Fattah and Mike Honda (D-CA) who through their work on the House Appropriations Committee secured funding for the Education Department's Office of Civil Rights to establish the Commission.

Honda will also be on the Tuesday press call, along with Commission co-chairs Christopher Edley Jr. and Mariano-Florentino Cuellar. Among members of the commission is Sandra Dungee Glenn, former Chairwoman of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission and member of the Pennsylvania State Board of Education.
