Cummins Inc. Offers Power Generator Tips For Businesses And Individuals As Storm Approaches

As another damaging storm approaches the Northeastern United States, Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is providing tips for businesses and individuals on using power generators and ensuring that they will run properly if needed.

“The health and safety of everyone is top of mind as the storm approaches,” said Amy Davis, President, Cummins Northeast LLC, an exclusive distributor of Cummins products in the territory that includes Maine, Massachusetts, Western/Upstate New York, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont ( Cummins Northeast LLC is headquartered in Braintree, MA.

“We know many individuals may need backup power in the event the power grid is affected. For those who rely on generators for backup power, we want to be sure individuals and businesses use them effectively and safely.”

“As a general rule, treat your backup generator like you would other elements critical to your house, like your air conditioner or furnace, or your car,” said Davis. “Generators need preventive care.”

Ahead of the storm Cummins urges individuals and businesses to:
  • Make sure the oil is clean and has been changed recently
  • Ensure there is an adequate, fresh fuel supply
  • Ensure the fluids are full and the batteries are charged
  • Test the generator now, before the need arises

“Additionally, we want people to know to use them safely – this is paramount,” said Davis. “They should not be used inside homes or small businesses, and again, periodically check on them. Often you will see warning signs if something needs to be fixed or serviced. You want to identify these problems, before the generator is no longer functional.”

On an ongoing basis, Cummins offers the following generator maintenance tips:

Daily, you or a qualified individual should:
  • Check coolant heater
  • Check coolant level
  • Check oil level
  • Check fuel level
  • Check charge-air piping

Weekly, you or a qualified individual should:
  • Check/clean air cleaner
  • Check battery charger
  • Drain fuel filter
  • Drain water from fuel tank

Monthly, you or a qualified individual should:
  • Drain water from fuel tank
  • Check coolant concentration
  • Check drive belt tension
  • Drain exhaust condensate
  • Check starting batteries

Every six months, you or a qualified individual should:
  • Change oil and filter
  • Change coolant filter
  • Clean crankcase breather
  • Change air cleaner element
  • Check radiator hoses
  • Change fuel filters
