" Cooking Light is thrilled to be presenting the 'Great American School Lunch Challenge' at this year's Summit. The work that school nutrition specialists do to ensure that every child has access to a well-balanced meal that tastes delicious is of paramount importance because every meal we feed our children is an opportunity to instill lifelong healthy eating habits," said Cooking Light Editor Scott Mowbray.
White House Assistant Chef and Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass will host the cook-off, and judges include : Tim Carman , food writer for The Washington Post and recipient of the James Beard Award for food-related columns and commentary; Debra Eschmeyer , co-founder of FoodCorps and recipient of the James Beard Foundation Leadership Award; Scott Mowbray , editor of Cooking Light and award-winning veteran of Time Inc; Amie Valpone , editor-in-chief of TheHealthyApple.com and Manhattan-based chef; and the three winners of the Healthy Schools Campaign's 2011 Cooking Up Change contest.
The Great American School Lunch Challenge, presented by Cooking Light, is one of many events to take place during the two-day conference focused on developing strategies and solutions to help end the childhood obesity epidemic. The inaugural Building a Healthier Future Summit, a sold-out event held in November 2011, brought together leaders from industry, non-profit, government, philanthropic and academic organizations. In 2013, PHA is expanding the summit to include more attendees; new and exciting high-profile speakers; breakouts focused on solving the problem – not just talking about it; a brand new Innovation Challenge; and much more. For more information, visit www.ahealthieramerica.org/summit.The Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) is devoted to working with the private sector to ensure the health of our nation's youth by solving the childhood obesity crisis. In 2010, PHA was created in conjunction with – but independent from – First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! effort. PHA is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that is led by some of the nation's most respected health and childhood obesity experts. PHA brings together public, private and nonprofit leaders to broker meaningful commitments and develop strategies to end childhood obesity. Most important, PHA ensures that commitments made are commitments kept by working with unbiased third parties to monitor and publicly report on the progress our partners are making.
