Campaign To Fix The Debt Agrees That Changes To Entitlement Programs Are Central Part Of Deficit-Reduction Conversation

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of the Campaign to Fix the Debt:

"The Campaign to Fix the Debt believes that any delay of the looming, nearly across-the-board 'sequestration' spending cuts should be fully paid for. It should also lay the groundwork for a comprehensive agreement to address our debt. We are encouraged by President Obama's statement that changes to entitlement programs are still a central part of this discussion.

"As the newly-released Congressional Budget Office numbers make clear, even if sequestration were to take effect, our national debt would still remain on an unsustainable trajectory, continuing to increase as a share of our economy. Any short-term fix will not be able to solve our long-term economic or fiscal problems.

"The Campaign to Fix the Debt remains committed to working with the Administration and with Members of Congress from both parties in their efforts to forge a comprehensive solution that will confront the true drivers of our debt."
