8-Day Trip to Churches of Luther, Bach and Pope Benedict XVI

NEW YORK, Feb. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- From the Romanesque Cathedral of Worms and the Gothic steeple of the "Dom" in Cologne to picturesque Baroque Chapels in Bavaria, Germany is home to the most beautiful churches. Just as impressive are the people who worked here: Martin Luther started the Reformation from the Schlosskirche in Wittenberg, Johann Sebastian Bach was cantor in Leipzig, and Pope Benedict XVI was ordained in the Dome of Regensburg.

The German-American Committee and Umlaut Travel are organizing an 8-day trip to see "The Greatest German Churches" from May 18-26, 2013.

After arriving in Berlin, where travelers will meet their tour-guide and board a luxury bus, the first stop will be Leipzig´s famous St. Thomas Church. In the very place where Johann Sebastian Bach composed most of his clerical work, the group will hear a Bach Cantata performed by the world-famous Thomanerchor and Gewandhaus Orchestra.

The group will travel to Wittenberg, where Martin Luther started the Reformation in 1517. Next are Luther´s birthplace and Wartburg Castle, where he translated the New Testament.

Onward to Dresden with the gorgeous Frauenkirche. Built in the 18 ^th Century and destroyed in WWII, this mighty Cathedral was rebuilt out of the original stones. The decade-long project was financed with support from the United States, making the Frauenkirche not only a place of worship, but also a symbol of peace and German-American friendship.

Traveling on to Bavaria, the group will visit Freising Cathedral, where Pope Benedict XVI was ordained as a priest. Close by are some of the most richly decorated churches in the world: the Baroque and Rococo Chapels of Rottenbuch and Andechs Monestary. The latter one is also known for exquisite beer, brewed by monks on the premises with a brewing tradition dating back to the 15 ^th Century.

After a stop at legendary Neuschwanstein Castle, the route continues on to Ulm, where travelers can see the world´s highest Gothic steeple. Next up are the Romanesque Cathedrals of Worms and Speyer, known as "Kaiserdom" referring to their history as crowning places of German royalty. The trip ends with Mass at Cologne Cathedral, a Unesco World Heritage Site.
