NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Calpine (NYSE:CPN) hit a new 52-week high Friday as it is currently trading at $19.83, above its previous 52-week high of $19.82 with 53,724 shares traded as of 9:40 a.m. ET. Average volume has been 2.8 million shares over the past 30 days.

Calpine has a market cap of $9.18 billion and is part of the utilities sector and utilities industry. Shares are up 8.7% year to date as of the close of trading on Thursday.

Calpine Corporation, an independent wholesale power generation company, owns and operates natural gas-fired and geothermal power plants in North America. It operates natural gas-fired combustion turbines and renewable geothermal conventional steam turbines, as well as cogeneration power plants. The company has a P/E ratio of 109.5, above the S&P 500 P/E ratio of 17.7.
