BlackBerry 10 Is Unveiled

NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- Research In Motion (RIMM) unveiled its new BlackBerry 10 operating system on Wednesday, along with two new smartphones. The company also changed its name to BlackBerry, reflecting a change in attitude.

CEO Thorsten Heins unveiled the BlackBerry Z10, a 4.2-inch touch-screen smartphone that has 356 pixels per inch, and the Q10, BlackBerry's first smartphone with a keyboard. The Z10 incorporates word flick, which allows users able to flick words with one thumb on the touch screen. Users also can toggle between languages on the BlackBerry Z10.

Social networking is heavily integrated into the operating system, allowing users to tweet or post messages to Facebook (FB) or LinkedIn (LNKD) right from the hub. Over 70,000 apps are available immediately with the launch of the new operating system.

Users can toggle between work and personal use right on the home screen, without having to go anywhere. Using BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), users can video chat, and share their entire screen doing so.

As part of the corporate change, Heins announced the company changed its name to BlackBerry from Research In Motion, and also changed its ticker symbol to e "BBRY." The stock will trade on Nasdaq. Heins also unveiled Alicia Keys as BlackBerry's new global creative director, working with the app developers.

The four major U.S. carriers will announce pricing Wednesday, with the availability of the Z10 in March. In Canada, the Z10 will be available on Feb. 5, and available Thursday in the United Kingdom. It will price around $149 on a three-year contract in Canada.

Shares of Research In Motion fell sharply following the announcement, off 4.21% to $15.
